Music (while driving) to ears

Blame the audio connoisseurs. These individuals can be quite finicky when it comes to selecting sound systems that would deliver the best sound quality possible.

Whether they are acquiring just a headphone or a whole set enough to convert their room into an opera house, they will require nothing less than the best.

So it’s no surprise if you find their homes filled with tens of thousands of pesos worth of custom installations that would make composer John Williams or film director and producer George Lucas proud.

Their discerning standards have inspired car owners to do the same thing with their favorite rides. For them, having the best-sounding audio system is not only about immersing themselves with the richest and most accurate sound while stuck in traffic or making long distance trips—it’s another way to flaunt.

And just like audio connoisseurs, car audio enthusiasts find that more speakers do not necessarily mean better sound quality. It takes good planning, installation and setting up to achieve the perfect car project.

How close does the RMS rating of the speaker need to be to the RMS rating of the amplifier?

Apr 25, 2007 by fluff_basic
I have been pondering a configuration I put together. Finally, I found an amp that seems about perfect. It is a classical DLS CA31 ... It has three lanes in total, 2x65 RMS at 4ohms typical and 1x280 (mono) to 2 ohms typical. I know with certainty the sub I'll be running is rated at 300 watts RMS ... I have not decided for sure on the components, but the ones I watch are slightly below the rating (50 watts RMS), slightly more (80 watts RMS) or more (150 watts RMS).

So how does closing rating RMS enclosure must be at the RMS rating of the amplifier?
My main question is going under ...IE: the speakers, I'm really gone for RMS are 80, while the amplifier is 65 RMS as .... I RMS is 300, while the amp is 280 RMS ...
The RMS rating of the speaker can go on the amount of the amp by any number as the speakers get the minimum power required to operate and it will not be damaged, but I wouldnt take the power of 'amp above the rms value of the loudspeaker more than 75%, not expected to shorten the life of the speaker.
  • In all honesty go a little more will not hurt them any ... but is obviously a lot more will damage them .... its common sense ...

How important is amplifier choice?

Apr 25, 2007 by fluff_basic
I'm planning out a system for my car, and am going for SQ. Up front, I'm considering DLS UP6 components, and out back a Seas Lotus 10. Im wondering how important amplifer choice is. Obviously, these are not cheap components, and I'm not going to cut corners on amps if it will effect performance. However, it seems to me like amp technology has been around long enough where top of the range amps (ie: DLS) probably have the same degree of refinement as lesser brands...but I could be very wrong. I ask mainly because I have an Audiobahn mono amp that I was considering using for the sub. Anyone have any experience with them? Should I just get DLS amps all the way around for these high end components, or can they see their full potential through more affordable amps like Audiobahn, etc? Thanks for your time.
Thanks very much, this explains a lot...I wasn't ever going to consider bargain basement Amps. That being said, the Audiobahn amp I already have for the sub is 100db S2N, and being that its for the sub I think I'll be fine with it. I'll probably pick up a DLS A3 for the UP6's up front. Thanks again.
Oh yea, and I have a 3 farad capacitor in addition to an Optima yellow top, and this is in a brand new Audi, so I doubt I'll have any problems as far as electrical goes. Plus, I'll be running less than 1000 watts total anyway.
You're right...and wrong too.

On subs you're probably not going to notice a TON of difference with a lesser amp pushing them (this is a subject of great debate in the car audio world...some say you can't tell with low frequencies while audiophiles claim to absolutely notice the difference. If SQ is what you're after...stick with quality amps).

Now, when it comes to components...that's a whole other ballgame. Speakers made for the mid to higher frequencies are where the "Signal to Noise Ratio" rating on an amp come into play. If you're looking for an amp for those go with no less than 100db signal to noise ratio. Anything less than that and you'll sacrifice a noticible amount of clarity and fullness in your music selections. Not to mention the noise that would make it's way into your signal from the source unit.

Subs-you can skimp if you have to and may not notice it

Component speakers/mids/tweeters-high signal to noise ratio or you'll be sorry you cut corners

Good luck!
