Even in the best of years, a convertible driven in the northeast spends most of its life with the top up. That's why the type of top is worth considering, when shopping this segment.

Typically, convertibles have a vinyl or cloth top. Volkswagen 's EOS has a folding, retractable, metal top. This subset of the convertible class got suddenly hot a few years ago, as people caught on to the dual duty beauty of the design.

With the lid latched, it's a classy, two door coupe; more soundproof, secure and snug inside than any soft top can match. And, when the weather cooperates, it quickly converts to a convertible, the top stowing smoothly below deck.

In the case of the Eos, the top-dropping process is a simple one. Press the button and hold it, and the top gracefully folds and recedes to its storage spot in the trunk. The operation takes about 25 seconds, which is fast enough to accomplish at a stop light.
