Questions & Answers

I have a reflector telescope with 130mm/5 inches apeture and 1000mm focal length. What can I see with it?

Jan 20, 2008 by atominfiltrators
It has an eyepiece Plössl 17mm 100x magnification. The telescope is an engine Konus 130. It has a focal ratio of f / 8, whatever that means. What can I do with it?

Here are the full specifications:
or_130 http://www.uk-telescopes.co.uk/konus_mot 20telescope%.
The 5 'Konus is an excellent entry-level telescope. If you're in the UK you will have problems with Jupiter - for years its orbit keeps it low on the horizon, if the details are difficult to obtain. Saturn is moving into a ring-on-the phase that we'll lose a few years too, unfortunately. With Mars you see polar ice caps and some dark markings on the right night when Mars is close enough (as right now). The person who said that you would Olympus Mons was unfortunately a bit too enthusiastic. This is a 5 "Konus not a 5" Takahashi, and yet, Olympus Mons - a large volcanic mountain on Mars - a visual target is extremely difficult.

The more general answer to your question is that you can make a lifetime of observation with a 5 "opening, once you learn to appreciate its limitations. If you like using a German equatorial mount, which comes with your frame, you might at some point get a more stable up to (and less frustrating things for hunting) looked in a Vixen Great Polaris and Super Polaris. If at some point you can consider a configuration Dobson, but he will not follow.

There are thousands of open clusters, galaxies, globular clusters and nebulae that are within range of a 5 "telescope, and many double stars. Skiff and Tirion's Bright Star Atlas offers 600 deep sky objects (open clusters , galaxies, globular clusters) on the well-drawn maps and costs only U.S. $ 10.00. I have provided a link below. Anything listed in the Atlas brigth Star (which is more than just bright stars) should be available in your scope.

Another book written especially for the size of the telescope is Sue French for "Celestial Sampler" which should be available to all (and major supplier of many minor).

If you are a true beginner, you'll need a world map which is a wheel-like card that can show you where the constellations all depends on the ability to find the constellation, the books take over from there. Sky and Telescope (see the link to Sue French's book) sells these but I'm sure you can get one in the UK cheaper. For astro-orders in the United Kingdom scastro try (link below).

To summarize, you can see many things with your telescope and is a recommended tool for beginners (often discussed on astromart.com, which is a great resource, costs $ 12 to join, they have a beginning "of" newsgroup, and you can also get equipment on astromart). Many people never buy a telescope of five inches, they just buy amateur (very expensive Takahashi refractors, for example). The Orion Nebula (M42), the double cluster in Perseus (NGC 869 & 864), dozens of open clusters in Cassiopeia, Auriga, Sagittarius, Cygnus, and too much to develop here. Many double stars as well.

Also: to help find what you want wide field maximum. This means low magnification, magnified view to help you find what you are looking for. (You can increase the magnification you are after). The "comes with" eye in your scope does not make maximum field of view. Contact your provider and ask for an inexpensive 32mm 1.25 "Plossl, or go on Astromart and buy one used. We are talking about U.S. $ 30 to $ 50. This should not be an eye for quality, but quality still can help - if you're feeling flush the $ 300 24mm Pan Optic is a great alternative .... more expensive than your fingertips!! (this biz is all about the accessories) for the best views of your scope should be collimated, your instructions probably tell you how to do it but you will need to have a real astronomy group discussion, no questions on Yahoo for detailed help. Try this group for coaching:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.
  • You will be able to resolve some surface features of Mars, especially functions such high contrast that the polar caps and dark regions in the equatorial band. You may also glimpse of Olympus Mons.

You must also be able to clearly resolve band spectra of Jupiter and of course the Great Red Spot. You'll also be able to observe the moons of Jupiter, but you will not see any surface detail. You may be able to just drive out of the Galilean satellites.

You should be able to discern clearly the A and B rings of Saturn, and perhaps see the Cassini Division. You'll also be able to see Titan and perhaps some other bright moons.

You will be able to resolve the disks of Uranus and Neptune. You may also be able to distinguish greater Neptune's moon Triton.

There is also a wealth of objects outside the solar system, you should be able to see - clusters nebulae and other galaxies. There are many websites that give you such information.

It takes practice sighting objects through a scope box. I recommend you start with solar system objects light up your confidence in your ability to find what you are looking for. Then you can switch to dimmer objects that may not be visible to the naked eye.

Is the Orion SpaceProbe 130 a good Telescope? What all Can I see in it?

Feb 14, 2008 by Drew
Its is 130mm EQ, Focal length is 900. What eye peices do I need to view Planets and Galaxies?
Hi,
130mm = 5-inch. 900 divided by 130 = f/6.9. Any good eyepiece will do. Say, you have a 25mm eyepiece, then 900 divided by 25 = 36x magnification - simple! If you have a 10mm eyepiece then, 900 divided by 10 = 90x magnification. You may like to visit my web page - link below? Just click on 'TELESCOPES' or 'CONSTELLATIONS' at the top of the page? I hope this is helpful for you.

Yours sincerely,
Chesmayne.
