JVC receiver?

Dec 13, 2007 by john l
I bought a pair of (used) Acoustic Research S-50 speakers.I floor would use my Denon DRA-685 to power.Well, I recently discovered that my Denon receiver need to be repaired (Speaker Output bad). I was given a JVC RX-778V receiver. When I finally got everything connected and turned on one channel of music, I was soooooo disappointed. You have to turn the volume (on receiver) up to 45 before you can actually get a real volume.Supposed to 110 watts per channel.I DO NOT (for a million years) buy that.

I think to go with Onkyo, Denon or stereo (no need for home theater).I wonder if 50-75 watts out of a Denon or Onkyo will be stronger than the (supposedly) 110 watts per channel JVC on this piece of crap.

Anybody have any suggestions?

I need help with my Onkyo and JVC Receiver?

Oct 04, 2008 by mike l
I have an Onkyo and a JVC receiver but the only speakers that the sound go through are the left and right front and the subwoofer, everything else (center and rears) does not work. (No sound goes through them)
To actually get surround sound, you need two things: a surround sound source, and the proper cable to connect them to your receiver.

We'll do the cable first. The regular red/white audio cables do not carry a surround sound signal. They can only carry a stereo signal. You need to use either a digital coax or optical audio (also called TOSLINK) cable to connect your devices to your receiver. It doesn't matter which one you use, they're equally effective. You'll need to do this for each device that supports surround sound - even if you are using a HDMI cable. Receivers can't decode the signal from a HDMI cable - they only act as a pass-thru, like your other video cables.

However, even if you have connected your DVD player or cable/satellite receiver with the proper cable, if the show or movie you're watching isn't explicitly in dolby surround, you won't get surround sound. For instance, most TV shows are only in stereo. Even old movies and TV shows on DVD will only be in stereo, or even mono.

Only a surround sound signal will utilize your center and rear speakers. Your receiver may have a setting that allows it to do a sort of "fakey-surround" where it will send the stereo signal through all 5 speakers. However this isn't nearly the same thing as a true surround signal.
