For 'Surfing Madonna,' some dramatic company

A small, but intriguing instance of art imitating life imitating the life of an artist:

In "My Name is Asher Lev," a play that just opened at North Coast Repertory Theatre in Solana Beach, a young painter grapples with an artistic obsession. The painter is a Hasidic Jew, yet he is driven to create works deeply informed by Christian iconography - specifically, the crucifixion of Christ.

That obsession fractures his highly religious family (Asher's father can't even bring himself to say Jesus' name, referring to him as "that man"). Yet as Asher tries to explain, making the paintings is not a religious statement, nor is it really a matter of choice. As he says simply of the artistic vision that so compels him: "It refuses to be incomplete."

As different as the two cases might be, there's at least the hint of a similar impulse at work in the case of the "Surfing Madonna," the mosaic that has stirred such debate since it showed up two months under a bridge in Encinitas, a few miles up the coast from North Coast Rep.

Did someone or someone who has not KNW the kicker pulse, 12 or 15in, they want to sell?
